Formed in 1969 in a modest Hackensack apartment, Dead Run initially went by the name "Spider." Founded by Steve Anzalone and Keith Borak, the duo soon connected with drummer John Carfi and guitarist Steve Barrett, finalizing the original lineup. Drawing inspiration from Steve's poetic lyrics and Keith's unique guitar riffs, the band's sound stood out for its eeriness. Earning their stripes at local high schools, colleges, and parks, Dead Run's fervor to be heard was unparalleled. By day, the band members pursued ordinary jobs, from TV repair to landscaping. However, the night transformed them into heavy rock warriors, driven to succeed. Their breakthrough came in a Bergen County competition, securing them an opening gig for Black Sabbath. This performance caught the attention of key individuals like Peter Weissman, who took over their management, and John Meehan, who became an essential part of their crew. Soon after, due to another band named "Spider" securing a record deal, they adopted the new name "Dead Run." With growing opportunities to open for renowned artists like Edgar Winter, Rick Derringer, and Cactus, the group seemed unstoppable. However, behind the limelight, internal disagreements began to surface. During the summer of 1972, a writer from the Bergen Record newspaper showcased an article on the two local bands that had opened for Black Sabbath the previous year. The piece brought considerable publicity to the band, but it also appeared to exacerbate internal tensions. By 1973, these conflicts led to the band's dissolution.
