Egor was a hard-hitting East London heavy rock band formed in 1969 by Mike Foster and Nick Diss. The two met during a pub performance where Nick and future Egor vocalist John Flite (aka Fat John) were performing in a blues band. They quickly bonded over their desire to create a heavier sound. After placing an ad in Melody Maker and NME, they recruited 16-year-old guitar prodigy Eric Taylor, completing their lineup with John Flite as vocalist. Inspired by their love of horror films, the band adopted the name Egor—a misspelling of Igor from Frankenstein—and began stamping it across London (yes, they had a giant rubber stamp made) to spread the word.

Egor became a fixture on London’s club circuit, performing at venues like the White Elephant Club, Bridge House, and The Rainbow Rooms. Their biggest show came at The Roundhouse in Chalk Farm, sharing the stage with Black Widow and pre-fame Elton John.

In 1970, during their residency at the Plough & Harrow pub in Leytonstone, a promoter recorded their live set for the Oddsocks compilation LP, a private press featuring local East London talent. The LP included Egor’s “Street,” a thunderous track capturing the band’s raw, and insanely heavy sound. Though Egor disbanded in the early ’70s, their recordings endure as evidence of the intense energy of London’s underground heavy rock scene.
