Pwll, Wales, UK • 1974-1976
Heatwave was a short-lived rock band formed by a group of 16- and 17-year-olds from Pwll, a small coastal village near Swansea, Wales. Guided by songwriter and producer Mervyn Selby Read, the band recorded their only release, a 7-inch single, in 1975. Heavily influenced by Status Quo, Heatwave’s sound reflected the raw energy and youthful spirit of the era. A small batch of the single was pressed and distributed locally before the band disbanded in 1976. Their track, “9-9-9”, has since gained cult status, offering a glimpse into the DIY ethos of mid-’70s rock.
