Lion

Birmingham, England, UK • 1973-1978

The UK rock scene in the 70s was a whirlwind of change and creativity. Amidst this vibrant backdrop, Lion came into being, led by Al Atkins, the original voice of Judas Priest. After leaving Judas Priest in May 1973, Atkins found himself in the mundane routine of everyday work, a stark contrast to his rock 'n' roll roots. However, the call of music was too strong, and he soon teamed up with his long-time collaborator Bruno Stapenhill, along with Jim Perry and Harry Tonks, to form Lion.

Bruno and Al shared a rich musical history, dating back to their early days in bands like The Medallions, The Bitta Sweet, Jug Blues Band, and the earliest Judas Priest lineup. This deep-rooted connection laid the foundation for Lion. The band initially aimed for a jazz/rock style, but they quickly realized their true calling was in heavy rock – a sound they knew well and had helped shape just a few years earlier. The addition of Pete Boot from Budgie on drums was a turning point, pushing Lion further into their rock identity.

Although their journey was brief, Lion's story is a testament to the enduring spirit of heavy rock music. This release celebrates that spirit and honors the legacy of a band that deserved much more recognition. It is our honor to bring you LION.
