Max, originally known as Dawn, was a hard rock band from Montreal active between 1969 and 1972. Originally formed as a blues trio called Dawn, the band played local venues around McGill University and Old Montreal, including the famed Galerie Café, known for its hard rock and prog performances. As their sound evolved, they adopted a heavier style influenced by Led Zeppelin and Blue Cheer. The addition of vocalist Ian Lebofsky in 1970 gave the band a Morrison-esque baritone and stage presence that completed the lineup.

The name change to Max came when the emergence of Tony Orlando & Dawn made it necessary to rebrand. Inspired by guitarist Gerry Markman’s cat, the new name coincided with the recording of their lone single, featuring “Flying Dutchman” and the high-energy “Run Run.” Recorded at Montreal’s Studio 6, the single earned some airplay but struggled to gain widespread recognition due to limited management and promotion.

Max’s live sets blended originals like “Run Run” and “Flying Dutchman” with covers of artists like Blue Cheer and Chicago Transit Authority, showcasing a raw energy and dynamic arrangements. The band split in the early ’70s, but their music remains a rare and compelling snapshot of Montreal’s rock scene during that era.
